one artist, one room, one weekend
our season opens with this solo exhibition
Erin’s work uses abstraction by subtraction to create open narratives that help us reveal our inner lives. By cropping and reframing imagery from film and other sources, the original context becomes unclear, letting the viewer quietly bring their own experience in to play. Her paintings create the sensation of a transient experience, often focusing on the gesture in the body or hands. We are no longer being shown a particular person or thing, but a moment in progress.
By Human Hands is a wish by the artist to contemplate what makes us human, with all our imperfections and vulnerabilities. The ‘hand of the artist’ is left visible to remind the viewer of the connection to the painter, to remind us that perfection has little to do with real life, and that it is often better to simply ask, “What is enough?”
Originally trained in mathematics, Erin began painting around the turn of the millennium. Her influences vary from William Eggleston to Mamma Andersson to Pieter Breughel, sharing a preoccupation with the figure and story. She is an award winning artist and has exhibited in London and Manchester.
